hard brake pedal

my 1996 ford f-350 has a brake pedal that varies. Sometimes its hard and you have to push hard but stops the truck fine. Other times it feels normal. The brakes have alot of pad left and the master is full. It was making a cliking sound under the dash like a switch but the sound is now gone. I have checked the abs unit and it tested ok.

Check for a vaccuum leak in the line that goes from the intake to the brake booster. Also try applying vacuum to the booster manually with a mityvac and see if it holds vaccuum.

Oh yeah and the obvious... try replacing the Vaccuum check valve, it may have some dirt or debris or something causing it to hang up a little sometimes. You should only be able to blow through it one way.
