I'd suggest looking at the 4.6L V8. It's the smaller of the two available V8s, and should suffice just fine for most regular driving.

The 5.4L is the biggest V8 they put in these trucks, and is a great motor, but is really only needed when you expect to tow.

Either way, don't expect it to drive like a mustang like so many on this board!

that is so true...especially those guys who complain about the trucks "lack of performance" and have nothing to compare it to except the new Tundra. I've got me a go fast car (in sig) and the truck is for style and functionality

what are you going to use the truck for? a daily driver? work? mix of everything?

the V-6 is sorta bearable with a stick, but the auto is...not fun. the V-6 is actually getting phased out in 2009 since it has been determined un-needed as the 4.6 gets about the same MPG and has better HP/TQ #'s

the 4.6 is underpowered, and only gets about 1-2 mpg more than the 5.4. You WILL notice the difference between them.

the 5.4 is adequate power wise. but it isn't a tire melting screamer. just gobs of torque and a great "all around, good for everything" motor. actually, that describes all the F-150's, but more so when equipped with the 5.4

Buy the best truck at the best price you find. They all get about the same MPG but the differences in power is great. The 4.6 V8 has the longest track record and is dead reliable. My cousin has an 05 with 209,000 miles on it and it still has the original plugs. I get slightly more MPG on the interstate with my 5.4.

go with the 5.4 the 4.6 was a worthy repalcement for the 302,as was the 5.4 for the 351,dont even bother w a 4.2,junk compared to its predecessor.buddy of mine ghas a 4.2 which only gets around 16,4.6 and 5.4 are pretty colse on gas mileage so id just go with the 5.4

If you don't care about the spark plug issues, or the cam phasers, then any of them will work fine. The 08's don't have those 2 problems....supposedly. I know my plugs are different, and my heads. Wouldn't know about the cam phasers yet.

I'm sure the 09's will have their own quirks.

I have had my spark plug trouble wont even get in to it one more time. You will be tickled with the 5.4 any year!! It is a little monster. cruising gets you acceptable gas milage and towing you get awesome power. I tow a 6000 lb camper empty and on the highway from ohio to pa I got 12 mpg with the cruise control on at 65 mph. not too bad

the 04/05 models had some growing pains

if you can spend the money, get a 06+. the problems have pretty much been ironed out by then. although, you can probably pick up a very nice 04/05 with 0 issues for pretty cheap...see if the dealer will give you an OASIS report for any truck you buy. the OASIS report is a Ford internal system that tracks repairs for each vehicle a dealership has seen

I just finished truck shopping myself and one thing you didn't mention is if you're looking for 4 wheel drive. Sounds like most people are recommending the 5.4, but I don't believe Ford will put a 5.4 in a standard cab 4x2. Just something to keep in mind.

Huh? I have an '01 S'Crew 2wd 4.6L and average ~18.5 mpg in mixed driving, a friend of mine has an '06 S'Crew 2wd 5.4 and averages 16mpg.

I followed him on a road trip, travelling the same speed and edged him by almost 3 mpg.

More economical engine + lighter curb weight + identical gearing = better gas mileage every time
