Does anyone know where i could find the engine serial number on a 260 v8 here in australia we have to have a serial number to road register a vehicle on a 302 v8 the motors are stamped on the block at the rear where it connects to the gearbox
Generally, there wasn't a serial number stamped on the engine. The original 260 in my Tiger, for example, had the serial number stamped onto a label affixed to one valve cover. About all that should be on the block are the casting number and date code which are cast in above the starter, and if the engine has never had the block decked the assembly date code should still be visible...but no serial number. Looks like you'll have to have one stamped in then...
The assembly date code Tiger Dan speaks of is stamped into the top surface of the left cylinder deck which extends in front of the cylinder head. However this applies to US vehicles, Canadian ones just have a simple code, such as 4 S. Australian cars were assembled in Canada, so I am curious what markings yours has.
If you have the US style date code, like 3M17 or something like that, then give this to the authorities as the motor number.
If you have the Canadian style marking, TigerDan's suggestion to stamp in your own numbers might be the best plan. An idea would be to use the last few digits of the vehicle number. The only down side to this is it might really confuse future restorers who might think the cars came this way!
