I am new to wrenching on my truck but have a major concern. I was driving home from the beach the other day and the oil pressure gauge went nuts. along with that was the engine light that went on. I noticed no power loss or smoke. where to start and what to diagnose is a huge factor. help
167,000 miles i guess and running strong till now.
I just went and drove the truck around the block. when I stop or take a left or a right the oil pressure needle goes to 0 and the engine light flickers. I cant check the oils accuracy due to the truck sitting on a hill. Im thinking that its just low on oil. I did notice I have a decent amount of oil on my starter. but its a 21 year old truck. any suggestions?
My 86 gauge gave me heart failure about 800 miles after I installed my first reman 7000 dollar engine.
2500 RPM and the oil pressure falls to the lower peg.
Ooops.
Installed a real gauge, plenty of oil pressure.
But the bad part, when the stock gauge went in the basement I was about 100 miles from home, late Sunday night after having just left the first FTE WV chapter meeting.
No place to get anything that was open.
Engine sounded fine and ran the same as it did when the gauge was reading OK on the way down.
So off the interstate and cruise a lot slower all the way home with fingers crossed, toes crossed, legs crossed and arms crossed.
Long ride home that way.
I had a good laugh after I install the real gauge.
At idle the stock gauge was almost pegged at the high end.
Real gauge said 20 PSI.
At 2500 RPM the stock gauge said engine died and was buried last week.
Real gauge said 65 PSI.
The pressure sending unit is located at the the back of the engine on the passenger side. They are known to leak after they get old, and the oil will run down over the starter area.
