Seems like the 7.3 is just a tad more than the 4R likes but not too much b/c some are getting better than 100K on the tranny with the 7.3. I think a tranny should at least go 120K+ miles before needing much.

I'm really not much worried about the truck performance and most of my mods are oriented towards longevity and not performance. This truck will be daily driver for my business so I do need the potential downtime from performance based mods. Now if it makes perform longer, those I look at it.

I'm really leaning toward the funny diesel smell......
Yes, the '02 V10 had the 4R100, but you said you were looking at an 05 V10. It has the 5R110. If I were you, I'd do the tranny mods first, get a set of gauges to keep an eye on it all, add a decent exhaust & intake to keep the EGTs down, then add the DP Tuner with a couple tow tunes and the 80 Econo tune. Then tackle the in-tank mods to keep the injectors happy. Keep an eye out for surge with the turbo -- if it does, buy a $75 Wicked Wheel and put it on. You'll have a mean towing machine at that point that will keep up with the V10 and get twice the mileage.

If the tranny ends up going, write off a $4k BTS/John Wood/SunCoast tranny as a business investment and never worry about it again. Where are you located, BTW??

EDIT: And the V10 may make more HP (stock, anyway!!), but the 7.3 makes loads more torque (I'm creeping up on 700 ft-lbs!!). That's what you need with 12k behind you.

7.3, I hate the coil front ends and the diesel will suit you better I believe.

Yep, got my gears/years mixed up on the V10-it is indeed a 5R.

I'm in East Tennessee, 2 hours north of Atlanta on I75.....

hhmmm.... You might look up Mike -- Tenn01PSD350 at Smokin' in the Smokies. He's getting his stuff together for a REAL mean 7.3. After his trip to Smokin', he should be putting down 400+ RWHP. That event is in Gatlinburg, you should go to get a real eye full of what the PSD can do!!

EDIT: You're also basically in DP-Tuner's back yard!! Lucky...

The '05 V-10 has a 5R110W transmission (Torqshift), a much better transmission.

I'd go with the V-10 if I were in your shoes. The 7.3 will get a bit better fuel mileage, but with diesel running over 70 cents more a gallon you spend more per mile. The V-10 is more than capable of pulling the load, especially with the 4.10 gearing.

TOTALLY untrue. Even at 70c more per gallon (if it's really that where he is -- here it's 60c more, or about $3.80 the last time I looked), the 7.3 still is cheaper mile for mile. At 18 mpg on the 7.3 & 12 mpg on the V10 (empty), diesel has to be ~$5/gallon to be the same. That's if you get 12mpg with 4.10 gears. My brother's V10 got about 10 empty. Towing 12k you'll probaly get 6 or 8 with the V10 and 12-14 with the 7.3... That's close to TWICE the MPG. Now diesel would have to be over $6/gallon to be the same mile for mile. Not sure how you're figuring, there Red. I know you like your gasser, but it just don't pan out this time. 95% of the folks would get the diesel towing that much that often -- there's a reason for that.

Actually, diesel here in NE Wisconsin is 4.03 this morning, 87 octane gasoline is 3.24, so 79 cents difference.

Someone will have to chime in on the mileage of the V-10 with 4.10s, I know they get better than 12 MPG, I'll guess at 14 MPG but that is probably low. 18 MPG is probably realistic for a 7.3L

PSD = $4.03 divided by 18 MPH = 22.38 cents per mile.
V-10 = $3.24 divided by 14 MPG = 23.14 cents per mile.

So, the PSD at 18 MPG is slightly cheaper per mile. I stand corrected.

i would go with the 7.3 also. very good engine. bad tranny, but that can be fixed. i don't think you can go wrong either way. both have good and bad that can be argued all day. v10 would have better tranny, frame, sharper turning, and bigger brakes. the 7.3 will get better gas mileage, more low end power, and should last damn near forever.

I know for a fact my brother never got 14 empty (his was a F250 Ext Cab LB V10, but it was an '02 I think). He might have gotten 12, but I'm sure it was between 10 & 12.

But anyway, how about towing 12k lbs?? MUCH bigger difference there. Fortunately, down here diesel never made it over $4.00 (where I buy, anyway) and it's now on the way back down. ///KNOCK ON WOOD!!///

Hijack in progress by myself.....

Redford,

How much (often & weight) you towing with the 5.4-3.73 rear combo?

Ever wonder what its like with a 4.10 or even the 4.30 rear?

I know the 4.3 is not listed as an option on the 5.4 from the factory but surely it could be an retrofit with the axles being the same.....
