On a diesel, your EGT, aside from having the engine on a dyno, is the best way to determine how much power is being put out..... less hp, lower temp, more hp, higher temp.
As the previous poster stated, 1200-1300 is okay for short bursts, but long term, 1050-1100 is about as high as you should go.
Towing a good-sized travel trailer, as long as I'm not climbing a steady grade or bucking a good headwind, my truck will run about 1050 at 65 mph.
Normal egt on my 05 is 300 - 350 at idle. I shut down at 350. Pulling a hill with trailer (no tuner) 1150. Cruising 400 - 800 depending how heavy my foot is. Economy 400 - 600. These are just my numbers. I also use it as a load indicator. The higher the load on the motor the higher the egt's.
I'm around 600 running Matt's General Economy tune while doing 65 on the highway in cruise control. It will go up to maybe 800 on the uphill side of hills and down to 400 coasting down the back side. Boost is generally no more than 10-12 psi max on the highway going up hills.
You've got to take into account where your starting point it. Mine says 95 degrees inside the pipe after sitting overnight when the tranny and coolant temps are 45 degrees. So where somebody else might have 300-350 at idle, mine is usually 350-400 at idle. I shut down at 400. And I run mine up to 1300 pulling a trailer in the hills, cruise at around 950-1050 on the flats.
