[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Dec-02 AT 11:35 PM (EST)] Today I was out driveing and my engine just quit .
its a 79 302 , I ran the #1 piston to tdc and rocked the Harmonic
back and fourth, had about 1 1/4 inch of slop, you guys suppose my timeing chain is dead ?? Had good compression on the cylynder's,plenty
of gas etc,etc??
What's 1 1/4 inches of slop? Use the marks, when the slop gets to around 15 degrees going back and forth, the chains about ready to jump. If your chain jumped, you would have no compression.
An engine needs three things to run and you say you already have two, compression and fuel. I'd say your module died. Take it to any good parts house and they will test it free. Worth a try. Have you pulled a plug wire and tried to draw an arc?
The chain is not that hard to replace, it's getting to it that takes all the time.
I replaced the chain and sprockets on my '79, it was so loose I could remove the chain with the sprockets still on! Also, the bolt in the center of the cam wanted to seize coming out. Had to work it back and forth slowly inching it's way out. Don't want to break that sucker. Good luck!
