overdrive light blinking

the OFF indicator for overdrive on the shifter just started blinking today for no reason, overdrive is not on, and i can still turn it on and off with the button on the shifter but the light keeps blinking. I dont know if it has anything to do with it but right before this stared happening my batteries were really dead before i started the truck, i had to have 2 cars jump me. its a 94 IDI E4od tranny

why is it doing this?

Theres a problem somewhere..You need to check the codes on the ECm (computer) to see where the problem is at..
The reason it flashes on the o/d is to get Your attention that theres a problem with Your transmission or one of the electronic controllers..
Take it to Your favorite shop and pull the codes!

I disconected the batteries to clear he codes, and it has been working fine since.

I have been having the same problem, just fixed mine today, it was the throttle position sensor. First things first though, go buy you a code reader, they only cost around $30.00 to $40.00 and will keep you from spending money trying to fix something without really knowing what the problem is.

i could take it to autozone though, they do code readings for free
i just wanted to make sure it wasn't some special code reader for a transmission

You could have Autozone read them for you, but I would rather just have the $30 reader and be able to pull the codes before I move the truck. It's probably something simple, but what if it is not? The 2nd time you need to pull codes you will be glad you bought the reader. Just my $0.02.

If the blinking light does not return after you turn off your truck then the fault is what they call a soft fault and if it returns after you turn off the truck then it is a hard fault. The code reader will tell you the code for the fault either way and allow you to clear it if parts are not needed. Good luck.
