I found a 95 PSD at the local used car lot. It is 4 wheel drive and has a 5spd. It also has 180,000 miles. They are asking $5900. I've been around the 6.9L and 5.9L cummins, but not alot of PSD's.
What are some things to look for?
What kind of milage should I expect for it?
How many miles can you normally get out of on of these engines?
things to look at
ball-joints, water pump, of course check the clutch, amount/color of smoke at start up, any mods
180k isn't bad mileage for one of the trucks, especially considering the year of the truck, I have more than 263k and it's running plenty strong and there are alot of guys with alot more miles and no complaints, as far as mileage runs, depending on gearing you could run from 14-20mpgs
$5900 sound like a good deal if it starts and runs well
The balljoints didn't look to bad frome what I can see. Is there anything to watch for like fuel psi. I thinking of the Dodges being noted for the lift pump problem.
Also who makes a good towing/economy chip or programer? I've heard alot of good things about superchips but I would realy like to have the in cab adjustability.
Well on the chip it will either be TW or DP both adjustable inside the cab. You can check the fuel pressure with valve next to fuel filter looking for around the 70 range at idle
TW is Tony Wildman dont remember where to get them from someone will chime in and let you know. And by DP I mean the DP tuner link at the left of the page. The chips are almost the same just different makers
Impressive stuff!! They look pretty similar but I'm sure the difference is in the programing. The DP looks like it has a lot more choices. Who has the best service?
Jody at DP has my vote for service. I had him build a custom switch set up for me, as where Tony would not. And crappy lift pumps aren't a problem on Fords. Yes we have our own problems, but who doesn't. That sounds like a sweet deal for a truck. What do you plan on doing with it?
Well I got him down to $5500. The ball joints look new. The rear main seal seems to be leaking a little. The serpentine belt tensioner pulley also has a bearing going out. It has 3.55 gears with a limited slip diff. Other wise it seems to run good.
I'm going to use it to drive to work and a farm truck. It may also pull my big gooseneck once in a while.
It already has a straight pipe, but I wish it was 4inch. I was planing on a mild chip of some sort, and hopfully get some decent fuel milage out of it.
Most likely it's not a rear main seal leaking. That's rare on these engines. Most likely you have an oil or fuel leak on top of the motor. If you look way back under the turbo in the valley of the motor on the passenger side, you can see the hole that everything in the valley drains out of. In that same area, you can see a rod coming out of the turbo pedistal. That's a hot spot for oil leaks. Or if it's fuel, anything around the fuel bowl counts. Most likely the drain valve.
