Distributor bushings?

Distributor bushings?
I pulled out the upper bushing in a 302 distributor. It looks like steel and is attracted to a magnet. What material is used? I am thinking of turning one from bronze bushing stock.
Also, in the 60's, a lower bushing was used. Later distributors seem to leave out the lower bushing. Anyone know the reason for this? Thanks

Distributor bushings?
On the single bushing small block distributors I've seen, the bushing is rather long (around 2") and works fairly well. It's my guess that it's simply easier and cheaper to manufacture that way. But I've also found that the ends of the single bushing wear a bit faster creating a rocking effect (from side to side) faster then the old two bushing does.
