Ok I towed my traverl trailer down to Death Valley. I get to the campground, un hook, and I smell propane. I go to my two tanks, and I smell it there. I shut one off, but still the smell. I shut two off, but still the smell.
It was not real bad, but enough to detect by smell.
Me being me, I said to heck with it. I am camping and I will deal with it when we get home!
So we are still alive. I shut off the propane, and am going to start ringing it out tomorrow.
Do the regulaters leak?
My hoses have no teflon tape on the connections. Can I use teflon tape?
I suppose, but how often do the connections to the tank fail? Heck O never had one fail there!
Yeah do a soap test. Regulators and the hoses are known to leak. My trailer has two tanks and two hoses from the regulator. One of the hoses had a leak at the crimped collar that screws into the regulator. An easy cheap fix. Regulators also fail and are usually easy to replace but cost something like $20.
If you are smelling propane at the front of the trailer those are your most likely causes.
I read somewhere that teflon tape is not needed and might even be a problem with gas fittings. I have never needed teflon tape on the propane so can't say what happens with teflon.
There is enough propane in the hoses(from tanks and to the trailer) even when the tank is shut off, that you might smell propane for some time. If you still smell propane after a day or two I would start to suspect the tanks or tank fittings.
if you replace your rubber hoses out by the tanks dont forget about the rubber hoses inside the rig (for the stove, fridge, furnace etc...) my dad forgot to check those on his '76 Avion and after he changed the regulator and the tank lines, the rubber lines inside the coach failed (while i was sleeping in it alone) and luckily somting woke me up cause it was like a gas chamber in that thing!!!!!!! it turned out the line going to the stove was leaking through tiny tiny cracks that were almost un noticible to the naked eye!! needless to say i slept with the windows open for the rest of the night lol
Thanks for the help guys. My TT is an 06, but summers here in Las Vegas are brutal on hoses, and fittings that get sun on them. I will ring this out soon before my next trip. If I can't find it, I will have to let the stealer look at it. This issue has to be fixed, soon. I am a year round rver, since I live in the southwest. We rv in Dec. and Jan. here. I just need to get this stupid thing fixed.
