Synthetic Oil

I have a V10 and am thinking about changing over to synthetic oil. i only have 45000 miles on the truck, trying to find out if it will really get me any better gas mileage. Also am thinking about changing plugs. heard it is a pain in the gas. any help ther ewould be great as well.

Thanks in advance

Jeff

at 45,000 you should have no issues switching to synthetic. As far as the plugs, I can't help you there.

I heard that if you use synthetic oil with a by-pass filter that you could go over 500,000 miles without changing oil. I really find that hard to believe. If that's the case why wouldn't every one do it ? Must be a down side but I can't imagine what it would be. Sure seems that you could save a lot of $$$$ that way

I highly doubt you will notice any increase in mpg going from MC 5w-20 to a full synthetic 5w-20.

As for the plugs, they should be replaced. Replacing all ten plugs takes about 2 hours give or take. You can go down to the V10 forum and start a new thread or do a search down there. There is tons of info.

I made a recent switch to AMSOIL full synthetic about 9k miles ago. In the next couple of weekends I'll be replacing it with Mobil 1 full synthetic. Im pretty sure all Motorcraft oil is a semi synthetic blend now but converting to full synthetic will not net you anymore mileage... at least it didn't for me. It may however break a couple ponies loose.

Yeah, I would never do that! Even if the filtering did it's job the TBN (active additive) would never last that long.

Use whichever you would like, the MC oil is a great motor oil, but Mobil 1 is also a great oil. Use whatever makes you happy and comfortable.

I have synthetic. I never noticed a mileage increase. Heres one thing that i noticed though from switchin from Mobil one 5w20 syn to Royal purple 5w20 syn. When i had the mobil one in the truck i used 1.5 quarts every 3k. Now with the RP i use .5 quarts every 3k. So my oil useage has gone down.

In the V10 forum there have been frequent discussions of how the synthetics seem to evaporate more than dino oil. I know I've noticed it too.
