I have an 81 Courier, and I forgot how small these little Mazdas really were. I'd like to pick it up 3-4", throw some real tires under it, and sit in such a way I can see over curbs.
A body lift isn't possible, but I wouldn't do one anyways, I need more room under the frame.
I'm also not after making a mud runner out of it, I want to keep it 2wd, just get it up to a normal height.
Has anybody done a job like this, or am I after all custom parts here?
Not a big deal, I have a TIG machine I can play with. Make up some new control arms, maybe new steering linkage, re-use the stock knuckles- It's do-able. It'd just be nice if I didn't have to do it.
Hell man, if you got a TIG, some fab skills, and a place to do the work you’re better off than 95% of us out here. I had a Courier in high school (with the bent up sheet metal, bad case of rust and custom wood bed it was the coolest truck in the parking lot by far). It’s been a little while sense I looked underneath one but I’d say you’re on the right path. Just lowering the mounting points for all of the suspension components is probably your best bet. I can’t remember what type of steering the truck has but that could be the only real stumbling block I would see. And if you cut up everything and it doesn’t work out you can always toss some leafs up front and bolt in an axle.
