I have a 04 E.B. and would like to keep it for a long time. My past 96 F 150 was a rustbucket. Is there anything I can do to protect it? It has a little surface rust on the frame but everything else looks good. I was thinking about Zeibart. I dont have time to do it myself. Or is it too late to worry about it?
My 01 has verry littel rust on the fram and other components to. After every snow storm i was the under body and we do live in a well salted area. BUT, this summer i was thinking about sandin the areas done that have rust and painting it with POR-15. Its a black frame paint and i have heard of ppl useing it in the superduty forums.
I think if you want someone else to do it Ziebart is the way to go. My truck is Ziebart'd (all are done at the dealer before they are sold) and I expect it to stay rust free for a very long time. Ziebarting also does inside the door and such. Not just the frame rails.
I don't think it is too late to do it to your truck. The Ziebart guys know how to prep/clean both new and older vehicles to use their product. Worth the money, IMHO.
My buddy bought a 06 nissan maxima and got it under coated. They cahrged him $350 for the first time and then every year they put a coat on for like 50 bucks. Is that ziebart ken?
You'll love the POR15 ieat..... This stuff is amazing. I have almost completed the full length of my X on the drivers side. It does an incredible job. It is though time consuming to say the least!!!
I personally only wanted POR on certain parts (I.E. Frame, crossmembers, some brackets, brake components ~ Calipers/ caliper bracket ~ etc...) and so i had to apply it with a paint brush rather than spray it on. This takes allot more time than say spraying it on. Secondly, you have to remove all oils and contaminants in order for POR to adhere effectively. There is a section on my frame where i just gave up trying to remove the oils. In the end the adhesion in this one area was not as good as the rest. It is also recommended to apply two coats for a true gloss/ strong finish, which i did, further lengthening the process.
I also wanted somewhat smooth surfaces so i have also been sanding down all the rust areas as best i can. This is fairly slow, VERY messy and difficult at best as you are in essence on your back working above your face. I have been using a floor crawler and full face shields with a dust mask on to keep the dirt away. I put the X up on floor ramps that raise it about 18-24" which helps in getting around underneath.
From a cost perspective, i initially bought a "Kit" that provides a small can of POR, a cleaner and a prep. I went through that fairly quickly. This kit cost about $20.00 or so. I then bought a gallon of POR and a large container of prep spray. This was total about $180.00. I have about 1/2 left with i would say 40% of the X underside completed. Then the costs of the brushes. POR hardens to solidly that it is pointless to try and keep the brushes. So after every time i apply POR i basically throw out the brush (I.E. I buy the cheapest i can find!!!).
The $180.00 (Cdn.. That is) includes a bottle of prep spray as well. This prep spray is used to make the frame (Once cleaned) tacky to improve the adhesion of the POR to the metal.
I haven't used any air tools yet! It's all been with an electric angle grinder or an electric drill with grinding bits attached.
Thanks gecko5, frame restoration is my first on my list of things to do, then the valve body (they make ur trans last longer) but thats a diff topic and thread of discussion. But do you think ull be able to post current pics of the frame? If u dont want to post them online, do u think u could email them to me?
