In detailed testing of a 97 f150 4x4
Good day my son just bought a 97 f150 4x4 5.4 and the 4x4 does not work.
Been looking around for a in detailed how to test each part to narrow down
the problem. We have a oem meter to test things, just need to now the
numbers and what wires to check it with.

SAMS link references a manual floor shift for the transfer case. If you have a **** on the dash for 2H- 4H- 4L , then the transfer case has an electric motor .. to see if it is engaged, see if the front drive shaft moves when you move the truck. ....... front axle VACUUM engage is common setup.

It is a switch on the dash. I do not get a 4x4 light and do not hear any noises that it is engaging.
I'm trying to search for the info to checking all parts of the 4x4 system to narrow it down to what
it is. I have a 98 f150 4x4 will all the parts off that one fit on the 97 f150 4x4. The 98 has a 4.6
motor the 97 has a 5.4 motor.

when you move the switch, the electric motor on the transfer case turns the internal shaft and the gears move from 2 H- 4L- 4H .... as you select. The dash light turns on when the "shaft" moves to the 4 x 4 end of travel.. there is a switch on the side of the transfer case............. you can remove the electric motor, leave the electric cable connected, set the unit on a bucket under the truck, move the dash **** and watch it move.. Could be bad motor, could be no power to the motor, could be stuck inside.. you can move the internal shaft manually after the elect motor is removed.

Did you jumper across the switch to see if the switch is dead?
Or did you take it out to see if it is disconnected?
Your link doesn't work so I don't know what you are looking at. If you don't have an owners manual you can download one from here:
http://www.fleet.ford.com/partsandse...owner-manuals/
because since you didn't bother to read the first link I posted
you are looking at the wrong fuse(s).
Or did you take it out to see if it is disconnected?

We did read your post. We checked all the fuses, the only one that does not light up
the tester is number 20 fuse. which is PCM GEM and CTM fuse. If I just turn the key
to on position no 4x4 indicator. But when I start it the indicator shows 4x4 low for a few
seconds.

Your going to have to settle down and not fly all over the place and I will try to help you.
Fuse #17 a 30 amp fuse in a 97 truck is the power source to the transfer case motor.
Look in the engine bay distribution box for the fuse.
Is it blown?
Is there power to the hot side of the fuse as the beginning?
One step at a time.
Good luck.
