my '89 F150's transfer case won't shift. the lever is solid and it's stuck in 4H. is it rusted, and if so, can i just remove the boot frame and spray and tap with penetrating oil to get it loose? i would really like to avoid removing the case or tearing up the interior too much. thanks
Ben.
87-91 trucks came with the steel shifter assembly.
Only way would be to remove the boot (and/or go under the truck), and try to drench the linkage with a good WD-40 or rust penetrator.
The more you do not use the 4x4 linkage (and move it around periodically), the more it will freeze up!
Good luck, but be gentle!
PS. 92-96 trucks came with an aluminum linkage piece, which prevented that 'freezing up', but in turn this piece is a common failure point in these year trucks, because of it CRACKING!
You can't have the best of both worlds sometimes!!!!
My advise is go underneath and take the linkage off the tranny and take it apart, clean and lubricate. All of these are prone to siezing and breaking if you force them.
a few years. it has sat most of that time, and the hubs were locked when it was driven.
Yikes!
I would go over it with a decently fine tooth comb...
Just check on the operation of the mechanisms... Including just making sure everthing is copasthetic.
Take off your boot, and WD-40 that whole linkage.
I know trucks ain't suppost to B driven in 4x4 on dry highway for a long period of time.
Let me know how it turns out,
TONY Z.
