does anyone know if i would get any benefits from swapping out my 10.25 for a dana 70 rear? i wann switch from the posi to a detroit locker but im going to keep the 4.10 gea ratio. any ifo would be awesome. also what would be an average price for a decent d70
If youve got a sterling now I wouldnt swap it out for a 70.
Basically the same axle specs
70:
10.5 ring gear
1.5" 35sp shafts
Sterling
10.25 ring gear
1.5" 35sp shafts
Detroits for the 2 are almost the same price ($589 for the 70 and $599 for the sterling). I would swap in some D70 ring gear bolts and a 9" solid pinion shims into the sterling for added strength and security.
I like sterlings because you can remove the brake drums without pulling the shafts.
Some of the guys i've worked with swear by the dana axles (personal preference) And another reason to swap it the dana 70 has a bit more ground clearance than the 10.25 which is a plus when im offroading.
i had to get a new(to me) dana 70 for my truck, from the junk yard it was about $800 with 3.73s and no LS or locker. i dont have any knowladge of the 10.25 but i do love my dana. it is nice that i can take the axles out with out taking the wheel off, nice for wheeling if you brake stuff. and it has the inspection plate so you dont have to take the center section out just to "inspect" it. but i do know that lots of people say that gonig from the D60 to the D70 isnt worth it because of the loss of ground clearance isnt worth the extra stringht.

Wait wait wait. I think youve got your axles mixed up. Only the Sterlings have removeable brake drums without pulling the shafts/hubs. If after you take your tires off the brake drum comes off you have a Sterling. D70s are just beefier 60s and are basically the same as far as style and setup go. The only real dead giveaway is the tube size. The covers and in most cases the brake drums are the same. You might see a little more webbing around the center section but not always. If you paid $800 for a sterling or 70 you got ripped off big time. $150-300 is about right from salvage yards and sometimes cheaper for non LS.
