I have been looking for anything that would make me lose some mileage. I have went thru a bunch of checking and took the back tires off. Upon doing so I found that one rear brake was adjusted out to far and was rubbing like crazy. I also looked behind the end of the axle shaft and noticed that there was really clean spot on the axle itself. I need to know if the outer end is the bearing or a seal. I cannot see what would be the inner race turning so I am hoping that it is a seal.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
PS> I took the throttle body off to clean it up and wound up taking off the upper plenum. Dang at the crap that was in there. From the backside of the butterfly down was covered with sludge. I cleaned everything up and reassembled yesterday. The EGR port was completely clogged to the point that I had to use and awl to punch thru it and then start the cleaning. Hopefully this will help the mileage thing.
Can't help ya with the driveline stuff, but when I start loosing mileage on a vehicle, I usually start in the engine bay. Check the air filter, try to remember when you changed the plugs and wires last, if you can't remember you probably haven't, its a PITA enough to be memorable ;-), and change the oil if its due.
All of the above, plus a tranny flush and a K&N short ram bought me 3 or 4 MPG and instant on starts (plugs were in baaad shape).
In the last six months the plugs, wires, both O2 sensors, coolant temp sensor have all been changed. I only found the axle part as I was checking for brake rub and wheel bearings.
