Problems with the 06+ Explorers

We've been looking at used Explorers and with gas prices so high, they are now basicly worthless. That means that we can get a late model EB or Limited 4.6 for really cheap.

So how are they? How is the 6 speed auto? Are all these now under the 5 year/60000 miles powertrain warranty?

no they are not under that warranty but the 3year 36,000 mile. I travel far to work and now have 37,000+ miles on my 06 limited with the 4.6 w/o any issues at all. love the truck, I'm a previous owner of a 99xlt and a 03 eddie bauer V8 and this by far is the best one yet. ride is smooth and tranny shifts smooth.

I am also looking at one of these and have the same questions. Problem areas and what to look for. Is there a big difference between the 4.0 and the 4.6? Any help would be great.

I like the v8 4.6 way better than the 4.0 MPG is just as good.. if not better.

4.6 hauls better if you tow. The 4.0 and 4.6 pretty much have all their issues ironed out, the 4.0 SOHC they use has been around since the mid 90s and the 4.6 has been around quite a while also. I think the 5/60 is powertrain and the 3/36 is bumper to bumper coverage. 5/60 is for roadside assistance also, or at least thats what the newer ones have.
