So, went to change the fuel filter but can't get the fuel filter cover open! Tried with the oil filter wrench but it just won't budge... (and there's not that much room there...)
As stated, drain the bowl to relieve any pressure. I have had to use a large pair of channel locks, with the jaws pointed down, one each side of the center, down into the fins. I promise you something will give. You may what to go for a drive and warm things up before you start. Warm things seem to be a bit looser.
If none of the above works then you can get 2 screwdrivers and set them down in the little holes on top of the filter across from each other. Hold the handles together with one hand, then take a really long (and thick) screwdriver and thread it between the shafts of the other 2 screwdrivers. It's the same thing Barry does with his channel locks but can give you a bit more leverage.
When you get it off and the filter out, look down in the bottom of the bowl and make sure you don't have an extra rubber gasket down there. If one came off an old filter it may be jamming the new filter in there too tight and causing your problem.
Be careful with the hammering thing. Fuel bowl is not made to beat on and can break or crack. Try to warm things up a bit. It does help.
I can't recall if the cap is threaded into the bowl (cap external threads/bowl internal threads) or the opposite. Here's something to try: If threads are like I mentioned above (been awhile since I did this on my old 7.3 psd), then heat up the truck (run it around some), take a zip lock bag with ice in it, or better yet a small frozen "cold pack" -- heck even a package of frozen peas will work! Place this on the cap. Leave it there for a minute or two and then take it off and try to break it free.
I've used this technique many times on other "stuck" threaded or pressed fittings. You always want to heat the outer unit and cool the inner one (heat expands something, cool will contract the other): viola! a looser fitting!
My votes for channel locks. We have a MASSIVE pair... Almost could be considered a novelty lol. Locked those bad boys on and pulled with all my might (not much might ) and it came off
I got a fuel filter that came with a new cover that will take a 1/2inch drive extension in the top. Works like a champ.
Ahh, you truly are a novice, wait until it is really stuck and the 1/2 socket just reams out that center. Then you will need to know these tricks listed above.
