Any help would be appreciated.

Your Ranger is known for having problems with the intake gaskets as well as the transmission valve body gasket. Here are a couple links that might get you headed in the right direction.

I think it is gas i'm seeing the truck has 278.000 highway miles on it and never had any problems till now. I change oil every 3 or 4000 miles only changed the egr valve a few years back and normal tune-ups just had trans rebuilt because o\d light was flashing now thats ok. the truck starts up fine seems the rpm's are running high in neutral around 1000 and when its' going starts out around 2000 and then drop's to 1500 in 2nd and 3rd starts to go up to 2000 when it hits high gear at 55 mph thats when the engine rev's to 3000 rpm's and slowly drops to 2500 by 65 or 70 its running at 3000 rpm's you can feel it kick down when it goes into high and all of a sudden mabye 3 seconds later it rev's and and stays high thats why i'm wondering if this could be caused by a vacuum leak someplace. then if i shut the truck off for ten minutes or so it then starts rough like some plugs are not firing i'll give it gas and start moving and then she runs fine. my mechanic can't find anything wrong . This has me stumped thats why i'm hoping someone here has seen this before.
Thanks
Steve
