I recently pulled the engine in order to replace the oil pan and oil cooler. Before the engine sounded good and started up very quickly cold.
Now since I have gotten the engine back in the truck Ive been having issues with the glow plug system. Apon the first startup I was hearing a odd buzzing noise when the plugs were on. About 10 starts later the "Wait to start" light no longer comes on and the engine is difficult to start. I know I dont have the ground attached from the rear block to the firewall... Could it be that?
Now for the noises...I hate noises. First let me say I cut the exhaust about 18" from were the rear single pipe meets the Y pipe. But the noises im hearing I dont think are coming from that..as first thought. With the engine running you can hear a deep "wum wum wum" consistent with the engine rpm. Its only noticable at idle, the engine noise muffles it out as the rpms go higher. If you stand infront of the truck and to the passanger side its seems to be coming from that area... Any slight ideas or things I should do to further find out what it might be?
You definitely cannot skip any grounds. The main ground from the battery is attached to the engine block. The engine and tranny are mounted in rubber mounts. So the only reliable ground to the body is going to be one from the block to the sheetmetal, and from the neg of the battery to the sheetmetal.
that faint tick you are hearing might be just your water pump... i know that because i to hate noises and i know how you feel! haha ... i was hearing that on my truck and discovered it was just a normal noise coming from the water pump. experiment with it and put it on a/c or defrost... you should hear the click, turn it to the off position and you shouldn't hear it, it took me a while to figure that out! haha, i feel that telling you this might keep you from going insane like i did...
