How hard if possible wud it be to turbo my 292. I have an edelbrock 600 on it everything else is stock xcept 1 wire alt. Can this motor handle the xtra umph..?
Ive heard that a small 4 banger turbo setup ran by blowthru i believe gave a substantial power increase on a dodge. http://www.classictruckshop.com/clubs/earlyburbs/projects/turbo/charging.htm
This will take u 2 the place im talking about. Also they said mpg was better The best I ever got with the Dodge on a trip to Spokane, was 29.5 MPG. I actually drove the speed limit, and had a tail wind, but it's still a heavy full size 4x4 truck. It's a 200 mile trip from here. It gets about 12 -14 MPG pulling a big trailer. Anyway just a thot that wud make a cool reality.Lemme know what u think
I think its more than strong enough to handle some boost, just dont get crazy. Remember T Birds were boosted in small numbers.
Im working on an intercooled turbo setup as we speak, so I guess I will find out how much boost it can take. Using a Holley Pro-Jection setup and ported heads with a good cam, Im hoping for 350-400 with under 6-7 psi. I dont want anything crazy.
Great minds think alike!!! I'm turbocharging my 292 using the turbo setup off of a 1980 Trans Am. It's a stand alone system that uses a specially calibrated Quadrajet carb mated to a Garrett turbo. There's pictures on various Trans Am sites. The 292 truck exhaust manifolds work perfect for this setup. Not much boost, but it looks cool as hell.
Im gonna run my turbo off the crossover pipe. I would love to see pics of your setup when you are finished. I have always been curious how well that Trans Am design worked.
can some one expain this to me, what exactly does a turbo do? i know it adds some more HP. and compresses some air or something. but where does it go. where does this compressed air go to provide more HP?

Just a thought, but wouldn't that cause an imbalance between the 2 banks and/or cause more exhaust to push through the intake? I've never studied up on turbo set ups, but it's seems you'd be creating a lot of back pressure on half your cylinders.
My current design involves blocking off my duals and running all of the exhaust into the crossover pipe and through the turbo. Then through a single pipe around the engine and into a single exhaust system. Im getting more and more serious about mounting the turbo down by the transmission to keep the engine bay a little less cluttered. Plenty of room there.
Nothing wrong with putting turbos on a y block. It is plenty strong enough to do it. I'm in the process of building one stout enough for twins and 20 + pounds of boost, with steel crank, h beam rods, and forged pistons....have fun...

I know it's been awhile, BUT I was confused as to what you were going to do. At the time, and I may not have been all that sober, I thought you meant you wanted to place the turbo on the crossover with it still exiting into the right manifold. !?! I get it now - Silly me! Me, I wanna hot rod my Y old school style and turbo my 87's 300 I6.
