Which axle?
The dana 44, and dana 60 use different sockets. You can find these sockets from your favorite tool truck for around 100 bucks, or from your local quality parts house for less than 20 bucks.
Specify the correct axle, and they will point you in the right direction.
They really do not need a socket, as I have seen the tool mafe from PVC, but I use quality tools and believe the correct tool for the job should always be used. The quality of the tool is up to you.
I've got several, for all the different trucks we have runnin round the farm, and I don't think I paid more than $40 for any of them. they're all OTC brand.
I paid $25 for a rear 2 1/4 socket for the rear dana 60 spindle nut socket, it was snap on brand. For the front i just got an advance auto 4 prong socket that was only like $15.
I need to find one for my 77. I called a local parts store and they guy told me there's two different kinds for my truck and said to take one off and bring it down.
I pulled off one the hubs but where the c-clip goes on the axle it had mushroomed and I couldn't get the internal locking part to slide out, I said the heck with it and will need to get in there with a file this summer. It was too cold to mess with it then.
Is that all? I thought I paid almost 100 each. Could be wrong, maybe my pitman arm puller was the 100 dollar one. Lol.
The Dana 60 socket could have been a little over $40. It's been a while. I did a search for the OTC D60 socket and found them as low as $22.
You can get cheaper versions where the drive tangs are exposed and made with thin metal. I like the OTC versions because they are inset in the socket and are heavier. The inset ones bite better and don't have a tendency to slip off when you're really yarding on it.

There are 2 different sizes of spindle nuts for the D44. But the 1/2 tons should all take the standard D44 size. I can only remember seeing the larger nut being used on HD 44's.
