84 F600

I am looking at an 84 F600 service truck, it has an allison detroit diesel with a 5 speed
was wondering if anyone has any experiance with the detroit diesel?

I hear lots of horror stories about the 8.2 Detroit. The most common saying around that engine is, "boat anchor". When properly maintained they do run for a long time, and are really good on fuel economy. Very common to have head gaskets go out, or even heads cracking.

That's it. The natural versions are pretty reliable and do give great economy, but are only good for 160-180 h.p.. The turbocharged versions like to blow head gaskets.

yup. the 8.2 fuel pincher is a good economy engine, but it will never win any race.

perhaps I will look more at the '97 F450 PSD with 6 speed
anyone know which 6 speed the F450 had in '97?
