Heres the story, sister has 99 Ranger X-cab. 71K miles, impeccably kept, ALWAYS dealer maintained.
Last week on drive to my house she gets a jolting clunk and oil pressure gauge bottoms out. Having the forethought I've taught her, she shut it off and coasted off the road. Called me, had her check oil level, evidence of catastrophic failure(oil under hood, under chassis etc). Nothing.
GEt it towed to dealer, they open bottom end, 4 oil pump drive teeth fall out.
Pump was my thought anyway. Dealer says, $4700 to drop in factory reman engine. I build classic Lincolns and Porsches so I plan on putting a longblock in it.
Where can I get the best quality longblock at a decent price? Don't want to go Jasper, Internet searches come up with some folks that "specialize" in every engine ever made. Not exactly a warm fuzzy feeling. So since the folks here have always helped with my SuperDuty, I turn now to the gurus.
Please offer any suggestions as to sources. I'm in VA and the closer the better.
have you considered a good used motor, maybe out of a late model wrecked truck? i dont know where in va you are but i live just below norfolk,va. beach and chesapeake, va., in north carolina, i know theres plenty of junkyards in the hampton roads area that have good used engines. i go to ralph's often, its off u.s. 58 in suffolk, near bowers hill, ralphs specializes in fords, there is actually about 5 salvage yards in a row, i call it "junkyard alley". hey, it beats the hell out of 4700.00.
Totally agree with floydguy, although I got lucky and my engine was saved after a recent accident, before we new it could be repaired they had found a used 2.3 with 41,000 miles on it was available and the quote was $700. Realize you have different engine but I'd have to believe you could get one for a heck of a lot less than the rebuild from the stealership.
jasper does great work for us at kings mazda, always blueprinted and everything is right the first time forget junkyard swap I'm in the middle of same thing the cost just keeps going up can you find a good independant garage you can buy eng from jasper and have them put it in im thinking 2500 all togeteher install/removal,swap parts to long block see ya going down the road.new to site. ase master tech since 96
Thanks for all the input guys. May explore the salvage yards down Norfolk way. She's got the 4.0 in it and its such a good engine I don't want to give up on the truck. Dealer was $2400 for engine, $2300 labor. Don't know if they'll
"cash and carry " the engine.
Haven't totally discounted Jasper, I've had great engines from them 4 times and a nightmare on 1 other (poor line boring).
Junkyard good option if you get a good motor out of the deal.
Jasper. Good warranty. They also have a great install kit you can get with all new hoses, waterpump, belt, gaskets, oil filter, air filter, plugs, etc. Good price as opposed to buying all that stuff seperate.
Line bore problem, thats a rare one, dam'n bent cranks!! I hate to quote but "pay a little now(jasper) or alot later (junkyard) problem with junk yard crap is it useally cant be turned over to check compression on all clyinders, run to listen, bottom end knock piston slap ect ect ect ect stuff dosent integrate,ie year to year if its not the right year not just what some redneck at the yard say hell yeah it'll fit....yeah right or.....it a really great deal
I use the following method when buying junkyard parts. I look at the mileage, and the condition of the car. If it has reasonable, or low mileage, and the vehicle has been wrecked, its a good bet that the parts are useable with lots of life left in them. If the vehicle is in good shape, not wrecked, etc., then I will avoid it no matter the mileage as it is there for a reason, usually worn out. This method has served me well. jd
