hey guys my 89 f150 5 speed has a knock. it is happening only when i let off the gas. i went under the truck and had someone touch the gas. and it sounds like it's cummin from the oil pan. But like I said it's only when you let off the gas. Is it the piston rod or the bearings? and if it is can I get at one or the other through the pan to change them.
Sounds like rod bearings to me. And you would have to lift the motor to get the oil pan off. You would need to put a crank in too or get your old one turned
Mine does the same thing. I've just been planning on sooner or later replacing my motor. So I figured make this one last. Another problem, was n my friends buick regal, he did some motor mount work on his car, and when he did the motor slid off the jack. Dented the oil pan. When he started it up it had a knock. The oil pick-up was hitting the bottom of the crankshaft.
You can ID the efected cyl by pulling one plug wire off at a time and seeing wich one stops the noise. You'll have to reset the computer afterward but at least you'll know what cyl to go right too when you pull it. As a poor college student i drove a month on 7 cyl it was carberated so i had to pull the push rod for the intake. In a pinch you could pull the injector plug to kill that cyl.
If one is makeing noise the rest are not to far behind so best to do them all or just buy a long block.
sounds like bearings. We put bearings in for a weekend trip without doing the crank---it lasted 2 hard days(more than we expected)---best bet is to pull motor and do it right
