Spare tire access lock

OK..its dark, raining, cold...and I have a flat. Try to remove the lock plug that covers the access hole for the spare tire.....Not a chance.
So...I remove the lock with a BFE..but now I need to replace it with something. Is this a dealer only item?? I looked on ebay and couldnt find anything.
The part where you put the key in (under the plastic cover) looked like brand new. The back was badly corroded and rusted.
Maybe Ill just forget about it.

Sorry! ...Had to vent
Another great design for 2004 huh?

My 08 has the same thing. I put a light coat of grease on it, then dipped it in a can of that liquid plastic all the way up to the gasket to seal it. It's good through the car wash, and if I ever have the same flat, on a dark, rainy night, I know I'll be able to unlock it the one time I need it. Then I'll recoat it and seal it.

Yes, probably a dealer item, but rekeying it would be easier than keying a doorknob.

Sounds like a good idea....I wish I would have thought of it....
Actually I wish FMC would have thought of it.

Medic911, I want to thank you for your post! I immediately went out to check my spare tire lock on my '05. Took a while to get it out, but finally got it out. Like you said, the lock looked new, but the rest of the lock was dirty, corroded, and looked 10 years old! So I cleaned it up, sprayed it with a WD-40 like product, cleaned it again, resprayed it and put it back. Also, made sure I sprayed it well inside the slot for the key. Works fine now. Without your post, I would have never checked it and could have had a real problem if I had a flat. Now I will remove and clean/spray it every 3 months. Thanks again!

A note about spraying WD-40 products in tight fits..... I was a millwright before I retired, and while still an apprentice, I picked up an antique 1/2 inch micrometer cheap, as it was stuck. I got it free again, and just to keep it nice, I coated the threads with WD-40, and put it away in my tool box. A year later, I took it out to use it. WD-40 does what it does well, just make sure you use it where you should......It took three days soaking in a penetrating fluid to get it working again. The WD-40 dries out, and thickens, so be careful where you put it. I never again put it into tight, or precision fits........Now that you mention the spare lock, I am going to go check and lube mine.... Thanks for the "Heads-UP" on this...

WD 40 is a Water Displacement, it is not meant to be used as a lubircant. A silcone spray would probley work better.

I always use marine lube/ marine bearing grease on things like that (undercarrage of the truck) so it can withstand most sloppy puddles and other "junk" that gets pulled up from the road / dirt surfaces.

I use a good CLP for this. You can be Breakfree at Wally World cheap in the sporting goods deparment or I prefer Slip 2000 as it's not hazerdous, but you will probably have to go to a good gun shop to buy it. I use it on all of my firearms and customers firearms while I have them in my shop, and since we are the humidity capital of the world it's a nice testament for the stuff.

I took the Lock out of my Dads 07 F15O for the winter. If someone wants the spare tire that bad they can have it. I have used Slick 5o 1 spary lube for years. It works great, last a really long time, and it is the best thing I have found. It even works Great in your locks where lock freeze up is a problem. Its only 4 bucks and you can pick it up almost anywhere. I make sure to spray all the locks every oil change.
