302 heads

I've got a set of '71 heads, still on the motor. The crank is junk, its scored really bad and I don't want to spend a ton on machine work. I'm thinking about using a '78 block, and putting the '71 heads on it. Will I have any problems, and are these going to be good heads to clean up the ports in?
Thanks,
78ford100

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-14-03 AT 00:29 AM (EST)]Probably going to need new valves, seats, and seals. 71 is the first of the smog moters, not exactly sure if they were still running leaded gas. When they started using unleaded gas, they had to switch to harder metals to keep the valve seats from eroding. Other than that, they'll work. If you're going to do any kind porting, even just cleaning up the casting flash, and/or matching the ports, it pays to do something with the exaust at least. The stock manifolds are really restrictive.
I just had an oil pump go out on a '78 302, and the bottom end got trashed, but I kept it anyway. Was a pretty strong motor, but my boss calls them the engines with the wooden cranks. I put a 500cfm Holley 2bbl, got rid of the egr and got a 1' spacer. With 1 5/8 longtube headers with dual exaust, it made the f100 it was in pretty fast, and it made an even better hauling truck.

'85 F150, low 1st 4spd,
B&B 5.0, P&P stock heads, Crane roller cam, Edelbrock RPM intake w/1'spacer, Holley 600,
dual exhaust w/ crossover, H/D radiator w/ electric fan

It wouldn't really pay to invest a whole lot of time and money into these heads if you are looking for performance as there are better options out there; but for a budget setup you can install 351W valves, clean up the bowl areas, remove the Thermactor bump and match the port openings to FelPro #1250 and #1415 gaskets and have a decent set of street heads.

Make sure you keep your 71 pushrods and rocker arms with the heads. Different style rockers get different length pushrods.

Thank you, I'll have to remember that. How much bigger are the windsor valves?

289, 302 and late 351W have valve diameters of 1.78" and 1.46". The early 351W's have valve diameters of 1.84" and 1.54". The GT40-P heads use 1.84" and 1.46", I believe.
