Well I'm 'bout ready to give up and take it to my mechanic...I haven't rebuilt the carb (2brl), but that's about all...Starts good, but skips, good bit of white
smoke, will run for quite a while then suddenly cut off like it's not getting fuel.
Restarts ok but shuts off sooner...I can keep it going by feathering the accelerator, but if I let up it will die???
White smoke is not good. That usually means anti-freeze leak. What do the plugs look like? Any one of them look covered in white ash? Or is it just really cold were you are at?
There is no vent in these trucks. Usually I get a good whoosh of air when I take cap off my trucks when I run the tank down low.
Doesn't sound like that is the issue do to truck running when you pump the throttle. If it was not getting gas, it wouldnt run at all.
What's the "skip" about. A miss? Constant, or random. Consistent til truck quits?
Only when you pump pedal? That's accel pump not keeping up which is a common thing with those Autolite carbs. Linkage gets stiff and spring doesn't have enough tension to keep accel pump tight with throttle linkage. Thus it doesn't always get a good shot when you stab at pedal.
My truck was doing like this it would crank just fine and idle but after it warmed up it would die. A guy I had look at it told me the idle mixture screws were messed up and there was some pitting in the carb and it wouldn't let it idle right. I ended up buying a brand new holley 4412 and put it on there, and I have loved it since I put it on. It ran great right out the box. Just my .02 Hope you get it figured out.
IF you have a non vented gas cap on your truck, that may cause the gas tank to collapse.

Ford 2V carbs of this vintage have a crappy accelerator pump diaphragm and check valve.
When these little charmers go bad, when accelerating from a dead stop, or at speed, the vehicle tends to bog down, hesitate, acting like the motor wants to die.
Both these parts come with the carb kit or can be purchased separately.
If the noise is from the tailpipe, then sounds like a misfire. Could be a few things, from simple to drastic. Plugs, wires, burnt valve?
Can't really see how it would be the timing chain. It's either working, or not. Could have jumped, but usually will continue to jump every time you shut it off(or try to start it). Usually not a once shot and then okay.
This may be waaaaaayyyy out in left field, but I had a 76 390 that started popping and carrying on in a hissy fit, and anyway, the distributor hold down was loose (wrong one, anyway) and the distributor gear jumped a couple teeth. I pulled it out, set number 1 on TDC, and dropped the dist back in and was fine.
