My '89 E350 5.8L is stock and I started this project 3 1/2 years ago. Had heads rebuilt and and pretty much most of everything else. BUT, I can't get rid of a cycling type of lope at idle. I'm at a loss to know where the problem lies. Seems to run OK, except for gas milage is around 9mpg. I use this rig for hunting, in the off season just to keep it from sitting I use it to run around every couple weeks or so and when I do I will put on 200 or more miles at a time. So I know I've not fixed something. Any Ideas?????
a cycling type of lope? is it the cam buy any chance? or is it perhaps running rough becasue of fuel delivery problems? ie plug injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, IAC. and check and make sure your plug wires are all right.
OK, Yes. I have pulled codes, nothing there. No, I did not swap out the cam when the heads were done. I replaced fuel pumps, (on the rail and in the tank) filter and had injectors cleaned by sonic and had spray pattern scynced. New plugs twice and wires. I went back and made sure the wires were not cross firing too. Had the IAC checked first, I believe there was an issue with a code then but when I back probed it, it was within spec and never had the code again. The lope is not like a big cam but more like a drone with a miss. Like I said I'm stumped. My wife is giving me static because it shouldn't run like that, and I'm in charge of lawn care and vehicle maintance.
Yeah, Cap and rotor new, plugs by motorcraft. Timing at 10btdc. I guess I'll have to go to the IAC valve next. It's just that I'm going broke throwing parts at this rig. Is there any way to verify it's the valve other then installing a new one??

Well, maybe you can do a better job with the lawn mowing! -Just kidding. You start getting into the newer vehicles and I'm lost, but I was thinking, is there any chance that you have the injector wires mixed up? If that is a retarded question , you'll have to forgive me, because I'm not too hep on the newer stuff and sometimes not too bright anyway.
Doug1222556, no problem. I think that if I had reversed two injector leads, it would run like crap all the time. The problem is at idle. It seems to have a miss...7 good fires then 1 no fire. But I don't feel a problem off idle. EGR and such was replaced too.
take the IAC off and clean the inside of the intake and IAC. If it smoths out I would go ahead and replace the IAC. If not I would be looking for a vacuum leak.
If it sits with the same gas for 90 days the fuel is turning bad and a fill to the top(fuel) a triple dose of that lucas injector cleaner and a few bottles of heet and Iso
heet will help burn out any water and dilute the bad gas!! Alot cheaper then replacing
components ***** nilly and for part time rigs it is usually the problem.
