Oil Temp Sender
I have read a couple of posts on this site where people have tapped the stock oil filter cap to install an oil temp sender. Is this safe to do considering the cap seems to be made out of plastic? I really don't want to purchase an aluminum oil filter cap for over $100 if I don't have to. Are there any other places to install an oil temp sender? Thank you in advance!

Here's the one I installed...Had to use the coupler shown as without it, it hits the spring inside the filter. Doesn't work so great in winter as the "well' get too cold from air flow. This spring/summer, I'm gonna drill/tap the oil pan. It's works well in summer towing the travel trailer tho. All I gotta do is to stop by the Ford dealer when someone has a SD with the engine out/ pan removed so I can see where on the pan I want to drill a hole.

Thanks for the heads up about the spring. Does oil leak from around the sender, it looks a little "wet" on top of the cap and also the plastic piece behind it?

Good point... I find myself using "Mothers Protectant" under the hood to keep it looking nice from time to time.

I think I recall someone recommending the test port on the plug on the filter housing. can't recall.
I have saved these links - maybe one can help.

No offense but I think I would spend the 100 dollars. That looks "hokey" even if it does work.

I just found this post from another forum from 3 years ago:
"Re: Oil Pressure Gauge"
I took out the engine oil pressure sensor and put a tee in and put both pressure sensors in the tee
For the water temp I put a tee in the heater line at goes to the engine. I plug the leg of the tee and tapped it and put my sender in there.
For oil temp I used the port in the front of the engine."
I wonder what "port in the front of the engine" this person is talking about?

I am going to purchase one through Elite Diesel as soon as they open shop this morning. I could just see myself messing up the stock filter cap then having to worry about finding a new one. I'll play it safe. Thanks everyone for the input. I'll post pictures after it's installed.

I have had the Oil Temp gauge working now for a while and when I have been driving for a while or start the truck up and drive after its been sitting for a couple of hours, the needle jumps. It will bounce around for a second then go back to the right temperature. It always bounces up in temp never backwards. It mainly happens if I accelerate or hit bumps. My first thought is a loose wire or connector but I can't seem to find it. I have gone through the wires, gently pulling on them, shaking, etc but the problem will not repeat. Has anyone else had an issue like this?

You probably have an air pocket in the coupling and getting on it forces oil up to the sensor via increased pressure.

Thanks for the reply, the gauge is electrical... sorry I didn't specify.

Where did YOU install the probe at?
