I left yesterday morning to take the kids to school and my truck suddenly died at 50 mph while lightly accelerating up to highway speed. After coasting to the side of the road i noticed the burning oil smell. Looking behind me on the highway I can see the all of my oil in a big stream that leads up to my truck. After al I have read on FTE I was not too concerned as I figured it was most likely an o-ring somewhere in the high pressure oil system.
After pulling it home and adding a gallon or so of oil to get it to the bottom of the stick, I had my son crank on it while I looked for the leak. What i found does not fit any of the symtoms I have ever seen on here.
Oil is pouring out in a steady stream from the back of the HPOP, through the hole in the middle of the round part directly behind and below the fuel filter. I have double checked with a mirror and it is not any of the o-rings or fittings. Is this some sort of weephole that would indicate an internal pump failure or is there something else possible that I have not read up on through the search feature?
Truck ran awesome with absolutely no leaks prior to this.
Here is a rear veiw of HPOP. Where is the leak? The round plate, held by the large snap ring, has an o-ring behind it. There was a poster a few months ago who had the snap ring break and the round plate actually came out.
I do not know of any fitting that should be here. On my 95 HPOP the place I am talking about has a removable plate held in place by a snap ring. It is about the size of the bottom of a soda can. On my 2002, as best I can see nothing is removable. It looks as though it is all part of the housing with a hole in the middle I can barely fit my little finger in. I have not been able to find a picture of a hpop at the correct angle to paste on here to show what I am talking about.
You type faster than me. Mine does not have the snap ring that I can tell. The hole I am talking about is directly in the center of the part in your picture that the snap ring is holding in place.

Thanks
There was never a fitting there to blow out if that is what you are thinking. And I am sure if you look real good there is a snap ring. I am going to search my computer for a few pics or diagrams. Be Back.
See fig 1 in this link. All the internals of the HPOP are put in through the rear. Whether or not there is a snap ring is a moot point with a hole in the rear plate. The only thing I can figure is that the pump drive shaft some how punched or wore a hole in the plate. Keep in mind I'm no expert but that HPOP is going to have to come out.
Okay, I got to questioning my earlier observationso I got the mirror nad flashlight for another look.
There is definitely no snap ring. The whole back is solid. There is not even any kind of ridge where a snap ring could have gone. The hole in the center is about the size of my little finger and perfectly round. There is one other hole at 3'oclock that is about an eighth in diameter. The oil is leaking out the hole in the center, without a doubt.
I'd say that if the internal guts havent came out into the valley, then its repairable. Ford doesnt want to sell the o-ring seperate but you can get them, where, is beyond me. However if the snap ring is gone, the plate is out, and the barrel and plunger assemblies are in view, then your pump is pretty much shot.

That has me stumped. Never seen an HPOP like the one you are discribing. At this point I am at a loss of what to say or suggest. I don't even know if a picture would help.

You've turned on the light for me Kris. He is looking into the HPOP not at the back of it. DUH!!
Bill,
Do you understand what Kris is saying. You are probably seeing the rear of the pump housing inside the HPOP.
