got a new to me truck yesterday. shes a beauty. 01 psd crew cab lariat. 92000mi. i have two concerns so far that i think i need to address. the first is a surging idle at idle in park. ive seen two other 7.3l's do this. no other idle control symptoms. just at idle revs up and stays up after a few minutes. touch the throttle and down she comes until it goes back up.
second is that the powersteering pump seems to cut out at idle in gear when turning. pain in the ***. i think it may need a new pump but has anyone run into this before. at higher rpms its fine and it only does it every once and a while.
im going to order a predator now. what kind of mileage are you guys getting out of these trucks?
thanks.
Can't help on the powersteering but have a question on the high idle. Since you are in Canada I assume it is still pretty cold. Under certain temps (~40f I think) the truck will close the EBPV and go into high idle to warm up. Mine does....then after it reaches temp or you get in a tap the brake (or the gas I suppose) it kicks back down to normal. That's normal...and from the sound of your description it could be what you are seeing.
maybe, i dont know. yaa were still alittle cool up here but i dont think thats it. the engine makes a different noise, sounds like an intake noise when it does it. almost like the waste gate is doing something but becasue i havent looked at it yet i really cant give a better description, but i will. just need some time off to look at it. this is the third truck that ive seen do this exact same thing. the others were in the summer but they were service trucks so i never took an interest in what the problem might have been. should have now that i own one again. lol.
It will sound a little like a jet engine hissing sound (especially at the tailpipe) when this is going on. If that is what you are seeing...nothing to worry about. It is designed to help the truck warm up faster.
It revs up then kinda levels off then after the truck is up to operating temp it will open back up and rev down.
It can also close a little while driving till the truck is up to temp but if you give it more gas it will open back up it is to help get the truck up to temp faster.
ill have a look, thanks. is there a way to turn this off? at idle and below zero this truck can sit all day and not warm up.
That's why you want the high idle. A diesel is really inefficient when it's cold so the idle is desgined to kick up to the 950 - 1100 rpm range. Touching any of your pedals will cause it to idle down temporarily. If left untouched it will idle up again.
As for your steering issue, how does the fluid look? Maybe it just needs a flush. Also do you have a steering stabilizer (shock absorber looking piston) on the truck? Try spinning the wheel lock to lock (left to right and right to left) in nuetral at idle, then again at a higher rpm and see if there is a noticeable difference. Is the steering issue just in one direction or both left and right?
Mine did that, and I had to replace the powersteering pump, i also noticed the brakes not working perfectly, especially while steering hard. Just intermitten surges with the brakes. I replaced it, trouble solved. But that was on my truck.
Keep in mind the fluid in the PS system is ATF fluid NOT PS fluid. Some one may have topped if off with PS fluid. You should flush the system. here's a link to a good PS flush procedure. http://seven.three.superdutypsd.com/...Steering_Flush

Another reminder. The PS pump is also the Power brake hydro boost pump. Under hard braking you may also notice hard steering.
