Legality Question

I'm not 100% on the law concerning a straight pipe exhaust without a muffler for diesel trucks. I live in Rhode Island as of now, however i am registered in New Jersey and need some New Jersey folks to help me out with this. I am planning on buying and installing a 4 inch mbrp exhaust and muffler delete. Is this legal in New Jersey? When i purchased the truck it was stock and i cut the old muffler out and am currently running a walker BTM. I am really interested in the much better sound i would get from a straight piped system so i really hope its legal. thank you very much.

It may just be a noise issue. You will be fine there. Most of the issue is with the cat - many states require a cat and some DOT officers will check. I live in MI so i dont wanna mis lead you.

According to two local exhaust shops here in Texas the muffler delete is against both Federal and State laws. If your truck came with a muffler then it has to have a muffler. Now, if NJ doesn't inspect your truck every year like they do here in Texas then you should be fine. If you have a state inspection then you won't be.

my truck gets inspected every 2 years...so ill go with the turbo back 4" mbrp with the muffler...i already have had a few run ins with the cops before and i don't want to be busted for something stupid like not having a muffler...i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that if you bought it with the muffler it has to have a muffler...so you reassured my assumption...thank you very much...

I have been running without a muffler for a long time now. It can't be against FED law, anyone openly selling a "muffler delete" pipe would get into deep shiznitz. THere are always different people saying different things, but have a look on the state website:

" Diesel powered vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from emissions testing, but are still required to have the annual safety inspection."

Mufflers are required, but then again, so are CCs.

NOTE: Inspection of exhaust systems covers the discharge of exhaust fumes and is not concerned with the noise level.

But diesels are exempt....

It's my understanding that it's a state by state thing. Depends on what your local laws dictate you have. In some areas, the only requirement is that the vehicle have a muffling device. The cool catch is some places also consider a turbocharger to be a muffling device. I searched over the MO laws and couldn't find anything about it being necessary to have a muffler.

You could always buy the muffler and the delete pipe and switch them out for inspection. It's once every two years.Jrod

If you read that info in the link it says that mufflers are required in Texas.

""20.15 Exhaust System. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with muffler in good working order and in constant operation.""

No where does it say that a diesel is exempt from having a muffler. I'm leaving mine on. It's not worth the trouble of trying to get it inspected and all of the hassle that goes with it.

This is where it can get tricky, if one feels up to it...what's considered a muffler? Does the law define muffler? Some would argue that a turbo is a muffler.

I'm not arguing with you, but trying to cover all the bases. Makes no difference to me what someone else runs. My truck is too loud in the cab when running on the highway to go without a muffler, so having one on there is by my choice. Just trying to open the options for those who don't want one.

Oh I agree with you on that Jeremy. To me the turbo should be considered a muffler. It's between the motor and the tail pipe and that should be good enough. I would love to run un-capped but am just not willing to have some a-hole state inspector give me a hassle every time I go to get inspected. I already get enough hassle in regards to my truck from the Homeowner's Association where I live.

Got to love the HOA's...telling you what you can and can't do on the property you just paid for. An HOA will keep me from moving to certian neighborhoods. I just can't stand the thought of someone telling me how I have to live in my own home, even if I don't necessarily disagree with the rules. Give me some acerage and neighbors that can't be seen from my front porch...that's my dream anyway.

Yep, that's what we are close to doing. I think we found the house that we want. Just need to get the process started and then I am done with the HOA. Nice two acre, wooded lot with a brand new house on it sittng just off the lake with a private boat launch.

Scott, I have always been told that Wisconsin is God's country. Sounds like you will have a piece of it down there in Texas. Post some pictures when you get the job done. Any fish in the lake?
