A friend and myself are putting together a dune buggy of sorts, and found a '75 Ford Elite (pretty much similar to a Grand Torino from what I can gather,) we can have for free that has a running 400cid engine in it.
Rudementary measurements suggest that it will fit our rolling chassis.
Timing is way off, but it runs as well as could be expected for not being started for 4 years. The transmission is automatic, but I haven't a clue of what it is (haven't been able to look underneath yet.)
My questions:
How much does this engine weigh (not engine and tranny, just engine)?
What is the stock HP rating to be expected from this engine?
What is the stock torque rating to be expected from this engine?
Any guesses as to what transmission is behind it? C4? C6?
Also, if anyone has a site that can decode, or can decode the VIN for these vehicles themselves, I would be interested.
I'm not a Ford expert by any means, so I'll need your help...
A few of your answers...
1975 V8-400 Cu In 144/158 hp 255/276 torque with the lower first set of numbers representing California specs. Those are net hp ratings. Now the easiest way to tell a c-4 from a c-6 is by the transmission oil pan shape. There are diagrams available on this site in the archives.
I have seen exact enginge weights on the net I can onle suggest you hunt for them.
The 400 wighs less than a 460.I want to say it weighs around 775 Pounds. Most 400's have a big block bolt pattern so they would not be coupled to a c4 tranny. C6's were the common automatics for a 400.
Most of the 351M/400 engines in cars were mated to either FMX or C6 transmissions, but some were equipped with the C4 in the mid-'70s.
Some MY1973 400s (apparently early production MCC blocks) were made with the "small-block" bell housing flange, and mated to "small-block" FMX transmissions.
The C4 was used with some 351M/400s in MY75 through MY76, with a "big-block" C4 bell housing (#D5OP-7976-BA). That part number indicates a MY1975 Torino application.
