just purchased a 99 f550 w/ 7.3 powerstroke and an a/t.....the truck runs great but im averaging 8-9 mpg..... it has a 9' service body on it w/ a crane and totals bout 14000-15000 lbs.....i really need a couple of tips to boost this guzzlers mpg.... id like to get at least 12-13 avg......can anybody help???? thanks
you can check everything that has been covered in several other mpg threads, but I don't think that animal is going to get much better mileage.
Clean filters and fresh oil is the first place to start. Then make sure all the boots are tight. Leaky ic boots will cause loss of boost and mpg. Also, check for any fuel leaks. drain valve is notorious.
Tighten all the boots -- follow your intake to the turbo then tighten all the boots between the turbo and heads. Make sure all of those are tight. Then crawl under and look at the up-pipes (between exhaust manifolds & turbo) and check for soot. If you have soot, the up-pipes are leaking and robbing MPGs from you. There are donuts in there that seal the up-pipes with the inlet adapter at the turbo that get loose over thousands of heating/cooling cycles and can leak.
Here's a link on the up-pipes, but these are the ones that replace all that and eliminate the donuts. It's the best fix, but much more expensive: http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/upp.html
