Hey, I am Wes, from Ft Worth,Tx. Just bought the truck I'd been looking for for quite a while. A 1981 F100 shortbed, 6cyl, auto, bought from the ORIGINAL owner. The cream puff only has 325,000 on it. The truck is actually in remarkable shape for its age. New motor at 268,000 and new tranny at 295,000. Having a problem with the windshiled wiper's not shutting off. I saw the post about this and I will try the grounding of the wiper motor. Maybe that will fix it. I also have a problem with the gas gauge not working from either tank. Hard to believe that both sending units could be bad at once. Also a problem with the high beam indicator not working even with a new bulb. Any and alll ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Wes
Welcome aboard, Wes, as you can see I'm from San Antonio. Good to see another Texan on board. I have an '80 F-150 with a 300 I-6. Great engine, allmost bullet proof. Can't be of much help on the wiper problem as mine has never given me any trouble. Do you have off, high, low swithch or inter.? I would suspect the switch. I'm sure someone with more knowledge of this problelm will chime in and help you out.
Glad to have you with us, Wes. Another Texan will make this club even better. I'm from Lufkin.
Can't help with the wiper problem, I've never had that issue with any of these trucks that I've owned. You're gonna love that 300 - what a great engine. That's what I really wanted but settled for a 302 because it was the only Flareside I could find at the time.
We all try to help one another around here. Someday you'll have an answer to someone else's problem.
The wipers not shutting off... I'd replace the motor with one from a junkyard, I suspect the "park switch" component in the motor assembly. You might look at the wiring connections to the switch; mine had been Frankensteined for some reason, I think in an attempt to at least make them work at one speed and able to be shut off.
I think Franklin2 already addressed the fuel gauge problem and how to diagnose it. Quite honestly, with vehicles of this vintage, I'd fully expect both sending units to be at or very near death. High beam indicator... just like others have said - clean the contacts, trace the wires down to the foot-operated switch.
Thanks for the suggestions and advice about my wiper motor that wouldn't t urn off. I replaced the switch, didn't fix it. Checked the ground, didn't fix it. Finally I replaced the motor and THAT fixed the problem.
