Depending on the year the 400M ranged from 180 hp way back in 1976 to around 166 hp in 1978. The tourque was around 319-336 ft lbs.
Let me see if I remember that rule of thumb formula..... Oh yea.
HORSEPOWER = MONEY (which few of us have) SO HOW FAST YOU WANT TO GO!!
Adding a 4bbl with new mainfold is a good start however, changing the cam along with the exhaust will help. There is a 400 hp formula for the 400M engine out there. Remember what the purpose of the power is. If you want pulling power tourque is the answer. If you want pure redline high horsepower the tourque end will suffer and your truck will not pull the low end side as well as a stock engine.
Make your choice carefully (at the national average of $1.67/gal for gas). 400M's were never respected for gas mileage.
>how much horsepower does a stock
>400m have.and how much might
>you gain adding a edlebrock
>intake and a 4 barrel
>carb.
First off it's a 400 not a 400M. Second you need to bump the C.R. and put a decent cam in to make any serious horsepower. The engine doesn't breathe well with the cam it's got despite the excellent heads. Frankly you won't be gaining much at all on the bottom end, maybe a little extended RPM range...
