Saw a bunch of exhaust brakes kits for sale the other day. I know the basics of them, but how exactly do they work? What are their applications in diesel pick ups?
A diesel engine has very little compression braking. An exhaust brake closes of the exhaust system to attempt to slow the outlet of exhaust, therefore slowing the engine down. The downfall is that they can build up a lot of heat if used improperly.
An exhaust brake is mounted on the turbo outlet in the exhaust and uses backpressure of the exhaust to slow the engine down.
A "jake" brake is a slang term for an engine brake named after the Jacobs brake brand. But they are not exhaust brakes. They are hydraulically controlled actuators that open the exhaust valves and allow the air brought in from the intake valves to be forced out with the piston and not be compressed. This slows the engine and the vehicle down.
