I have just recently purchased a 1968 F600 Dump truck. I need to fix the ebrake assembly somehow? The ratchet mechanism located under the cab next to the transmisson was grimey. I cleaned it up but still can't get it to hold well. It seems to need more spring pressure to hold the tooth into the the rack. It wants to pop out and I can't rely on it. The tooth and rack look good to me, but they may be shot. Can I buy a new rack or tooth? I have now idea of part #'s or if my local dealer can even order parts for this old of a truck. Anyone have any suggestions to get more pressure to keep the tooth engaged?
I need the ebrake to work as intended. It popped out on the previous owner thus the dented drivers door when it got jammed against a fence post while dumping. Thanks for any advice guys..........

I can help you with parts numbers, even search for the parts-new.
The brake isn't holding well?
You have a drum type emergency brake system located behind the transmission. Inside the drum are two brake shoes...I'll betcha the lining on those shoes is worn down to nothing.
If the brake handle won't hold, there are two springs inside that drum, that link the two brake shows together...they're either weak or broken = common on older trucks.
There's about 6 different brake handles and corresponding ratchet assys.
Where is your brake handle? On the floor next to the shift lever, or under the dash?
> > Are you anywhere near Seattle or Bremerton WA??
The ebrake lever is on the floor to the right of the shifter. When I pull it back and the part of the handle that in against my palm has to be pulled away from the main handle. It is like there is no pressure keeping the smaller lever away from the main handle and keeping the tooth engaged in the rack. When I pull it back I don't hear that familiar sound of a ebrake being set like in my other rigs. When it is engaged the brake holds well, it just wants to pop out of the rack. I am located in Auburn Wa.

You need to look at the different pictures of the brake ratchets.
It will be too difficult to explain all the parts for those different types of ratchets on the internet...there are too many different types to choose from.
Thanks for the quick reply and the information. I will take a look inside the ebrake drum and see whats going on in there. It looks pretty straightforward as far as removal. I don't have manual or any info on taking it apart. Anything special needed? I will call Ed, but really would like to get it apart first.
NUmberdummy you were right! The shoes were toasted. I have new springs and shoes coming from Horizon Ford and am replacing the rear trans seal as well. Just about got everything working now. Thanks
With new springs and shoes I stil am not happy with the ebrake's ability to hold. The linkage is not as tight as I think it should be. I can wiggle the e brake handle side to side and it seems to "bite" into the rack that holds it engaged better. I am thinling the looseness in the linkage and the wear on the rack and tooth that engages it are worn. I guess I will take it apart and find out.
Should the linkage be tight so as to not allow any sideways movement?
How hard it is to install a "Micro Lock" type brake actuator? I want something I can rely on.
