Hi and Help,
I had to replace my dist stator. The engine now won't start, skips like the timing is off. The distributor appears to be welded on! I have tried 2 wonder bars prying up and a gentle use of a pipe wrench to get it to twist to loosen. My next plan is a less than gentle use of a pipe wrench (on the lower metal body of the thing) Any advice or warnings about doing this. Will I crush the thing in place, never to remove it? Any better ideas? Heat? Where? The snow is coming down and my truck is dead!! Thanks. Larry
It seems that Ford was nice enough to put the distributer down in a hole where crud and such tends to "weld" them in. The best solution I have found is lots of lube (i.e. WD-40, PB Blaster, etc.), lots of patience, and a little GENTLE persuasion. You can easily crush the distributer body, if not careful! Keep at it with the SMALL pipe wrench, gently tapping it back and forth untill it comes loose. Antisieze when reinstalling. Good luck!
Since you didn't mention it doing it, did you remove the hold down clamp? Not trying to be insulting, but I have overlooked the obvious before and broke things trying to force parts to do what I thought they should.
No insult taken. I had removed it and now have the dist removed, a few taps on the vaccum adv with a hammer did it w/ lots of wd40. Now look for my new problem posted as 'no spark, some cylinders'. Thanks all for your help.
