Look on your door jam for the truck sticker and it will tell what the GVW for the front end. It will be Dana something. I would think a 44. I don't if Ford used the 50's that early. You may want to bring your VIN when you come. It may help.

Welsh gas guzzler,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Measure the diameter of the front lockout hub.
Over 4" is a Dana 50 IFS.
Under 4" is a Dana 44 IFS.

I will check my measurements again tomorrow, but I seem to remember the 44 is a 3.75" diameter hub.

If it is like most trucks here, the extended cab will have a 50 under it.

Measure the locking hub. If it is 3"- 3 1/4" then you have a Dana 44. If it is 4", it is a Dana 50. This is assuming you still have a TTB independent front axle.
Most likely it is a 50. I believe all super cabs had the larger front axle.

Being an extended cab, you SHOULD have the larger, Dana 50 front axle, after 84, the ex cabs received it by default, but, anything is possible.

Make sure you get front axle universal joints as these will probably be shot also.

Hey safe travels to and fro

Make sure when you do order from Rock Auto that you order quality parts not the cheap parts "white box" stuff.

I have a very good mechanic friend that prefers to use Moog sus*****on parts. I have a bunch of moog parts here waiting to go into my wifes car..nice looking stuff

Since you are going to have it apart, you definetely want to get hub seals and repack the bearings. It would also be a good idea to buy a set of spindle bearings and the seals for the back side of the spindles. There's a good chance you can just regrease your existing ones, but you'll have them if you need them.

If my memory serves me, the Dana 60 and Dana 50 use the same size socket for the bearing adjustment nuts. The OTC part # for the socket is 7158.

can someone tell me what brand "OEM" number for this spindle socket would be?

i have the Dana 50 front with WARN manual locking hubs.-i assume these are not factory hubs?

i do know, the Dana 44 socket is slightly to small.

The Dana 50 and Dana 60 spindle socket has 6 prongs on it instead of the 4 prong like the Dana 44/35/30/GM 10 bolt uses. My 84 F250 RC LB has the Dana 50 front axle and Dana 70u rear axle. According to my VIN plate and LMC truck I have an F250 HD.
