I am starting my 400 rebuild and wondering if anyone can give me positive or negative information on using oil restrictors. My Mopar buddies say stay away from them, but some Ford people recomend them. My 351m with out restrictors with 5000 miles on a rebuild is loosing oil preasure and I am questioning my rebuild techniques now. That may be bearing tolerances too for all I know. Anyone with some opinion, please speak up.
If you are going to be running high RPM's consistantly, then yes, I would consider them. However, if it will be used as a truck (low-end torque as compared to high RPM HP), then a high-volume (not high-pressure) pump should do the trick for you.
Diddo on the HV oil pump. I would also put an external oil line from the outlet above the fuel pump to the outlet used by the oil sending unit. This will give the 3,4,5 mains more oil. Use a T-fitting so you can still use the sending unit.
Hey tuffguy, the hv oil pump does add a little extra oil to the vavletrain on top, but it's that oil that keeps the rockers lubed and the springs cool. I've never heard of "flooding" this area, but to keep it to a minimum, just smooth out the oil drainback holes. also, the 400 doesn't need to turn that many rpm's to make power, therefore it is my opinion that restrictors do not need to be installed.
