351M

I just bought a '79 F150 and it has a 351m. Can someone tell me how that is different from the 351 Cleveland or the 351 Windsor?
It needs some work and I want to make sure when I order parts, that I get the right ones.

351M/400 are the same except for stroke. Uses big block bell housing pattern. 351c uses small bell housing pattern. Things that interchange are heads (don't use the 4v ones), cams(you don't want one designed for an 8grand cleaveland motor, distributor, water pump, valve covers. Intake manifolds are different. They never put a Cleaveland ina truck. The motor mounts are also different. The 351 windsor is a completely different beast and nothing will interchange except the distributor with a different gear.
Hope this helps.

You mentioned 351 M/400 are the same except for the stroke. That's where you lost me. Is the 400 an engine also? So my 351 is neither a windsor or a cleveland (which I know usually goes in Mustangs). When I go to buy parts, I just have to say I have a 351m and they will know? Thanks, I appreciate any help!

The 351M was drived from the 400 motor. The crank and pistons are different to provide less stoke (cubic inches) I like to order speed parts from Summit Racing. They are online. If you specify 351M most local parts stores should know. Everything else is the same.

OK. Sounds good. Thanks for explaining that. Is that what you have in yours? How long have you had it? How's the condition of the body? I've got rusted thru floor pans that I started working on last week. I live in Connecticut so I need to get a jump on the rust. I bought it a month ago today and haven't done much because of the weather. I'm not sure if I'll get them welded or do the rivet thing. I had a 1970 Ford Fairlane with a 302 and 230,000 miles that I drove to the junk yard. The body was just falling apart. Good vehicles, those Fords!

Well i'm working on my third motor. First one was used up when I got it, second 351m went 100,000 miles as was sold to a friend so I could build a 400. I think that one is still going strong.I now have a 400m with way too much money invested in it. But it sure is fun. The 351m was intended as just a good old truck motor but responds well to intake, carb, headers etc. and you can transfer those parts to a 400 someday if you have to rebuild it. I live in New Mexico and don't have a rust problem. I did invest in a good paint job as the sun takes it's toll out here. i'd post some pictures but don't have a web site.

Good luck!
