I'm thinking about buying a 2001 Ranger XLT 4x4. It has about 68000 miles, auto trans and 3.0 V6 (bummer). Looks real nice, apparently was towed behind an RV for some portion of its life.
I'd like to hear some opinions on this model year Ranger. Any problem areas I should look out for? Is the fact that it was towed around behind an RV of any concern? What kind of gas mileage could I expect? What would be a good price to pay for this truck?
I have a 98 ranger with the 4.0 engine and 104,000 miles. i have never had any major probem's with it, I have owned the truck about 4 yr's or so. I average betweeb 18 and 20 miles per gallon. I own a 97 Taurus station wagon with the 3.0 and get around 25 mpg with it, they are great engines as far as i am concerned. The only thing i don't like about the ranger is sometimes i wish it had more room lol.
The only thing I would be wary of was how was it towed behind RV. It had to be towed with the rear wheels off the gorund or the driveshaft disconnected. You can not tow an Automatic very far or very fast with causing damage, to tranny, if it is towed in a fashion where the driveshaft turns.
My 03 ranger recently has been giving me a little problem I CAN START IT UP FINE WHEN ITS COLD BUT AS SOON AS IT GETS WARM IT DIES I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. It doe not doe this all the time though. The first time it done this it put out a bunch of white to dark smoke. However I went back and started it about 30 to 45 minutes later and it ran fine. The second time it acted up it done the same thing without the smoke but it ran rougher. It now has a pretty steady miss to it, however it has yet to die on me since.my thought was it must have been a fuel issue. When a sensor goes out does it go out and stay out or can it play games with you?Any direction would be greatly appreciated,Thanks

Dave - you should post your problem and questions in a separate thread and it will get more visibility and the guys here will give you good advice. Have you checked to see if there are any DTC recorded?

I am very pleased with my 3.0 4x4. But prefer the manual transmission.
It was would concern me that it was towed around, cause maybe it doesn't run ha ha. Either that or the 3.0 couldn't keep up with the RV and had to be towed ha ha. It should be a nice rounded package by 01, it won't have the pulse vacume hubs to worry about, 2000 was the last year for those. It won't have the death rattle comming from the timming chains as it's a 3.0 and not a 4.0 in 01. You should be in good shape. However it is recomended that you run seafoam through a 3.0 when they get some miles as they will carbon up and loose power, a 3.0 doesn't have any to spare ha ha. Seriously, they do recomend seafoam on the 3.0 with miles, but thats usally around 100,000 miles are so. The 3.0 is a good slow dependable power plant, it's rock solid. The 01 also has the sharp grill, at least I think so. Should make you a nice dependable truck.
Overall, its a good truck. The 3.0L is a good engine, but it definetly wont win very many drag races.
It should pull 18-20 mpg on the highway. The fact that it was towed around by an RV could be a concern, but if the truck drives fine I dont think I would worry about it.
As far as price, your best bet would be to go on www.kbb.com or www.nadaguides.com and just look it up. The value of a given vehicle can vary from region to region. Me personally, I wouldnt pay over $8,000 for that truck but what its worth will really depend upon what options it has.
Before I bought the F-150 I currently drive, I had a '99 Ford Ranger Supercab 4x4 with a 4.0L OHV V6, 5-speed automatic tranny and Off-Road Package. It was a great little truck and I sometimes wish I would have kept it instead of getting the F-150.
the only thing that bothers me is the towing, do you know how it was towed because if it was draged ( front weels off ground) that would cause more miles of wear on ur rear diff and tranny even though its in neutral.
