i have a 1994 ranger with 2.3 4 cyl. auto. engine was running poor at idle and at low rpm like when in overdrive, did not have enough power to maintain speed.gas mileage went down to about 8-10 mpg.seemed to run smooth when accelerating or at higher rpm.took to a shop they tested compression-- #2 cyl.35psi 1 3 and4 cyl all around 120psi. also spark plugs in #2 totally burned up, electrode completely incinerated. i have now removed the head and what i see is that the # 2 cyl. is totaly coated with oil deposits everything is black, top of piston, valves, and so on. all the other cylinders are white looking. besides color all the pistons look the same i see no obvious damage same with the valves and valve springs and everything on top of the head looks o.k. the head is at a machine shop today, they are going to look it over and let me know. so here is my question-- does just my head gasket need to be replaced, or do i have ring damage to # 2 piston, or was my problem in the valve train?
You probably have a burnt exhaust valve in that cylinder and the machine shop will find it. Being there was low compression in #2 cyl, the fuel was not getting burnrd properly thus the black sooty deposits.
I would wait to hear from the machine shop about the head, though I would put my money on a burnt valve.
Well it is a litle late now to do the trouble shooting. Normally if you have low compression a cylinder you squirt some oil in that cylinder and run the compression test again if the compression comes up it is bad rings if it doesn't is bad a bad valve.
so, i finally heard back from the shop, they told me that both the intake and exhaust valves were bad on #2 cylinder. i am having them put all new valves in , then im gonna put it back on the truck and hope all runs good.
