I asked a speedometer question earlier and got great advice but I can't seem to make things happen. I am trying to connect the speedometer cable to the back of the speedometer on my 1950 F-1 but the stem doesn't want to insert enough to screw the cable on. Of couse I cannot see what I am doing. I even got my son (who is much smaller than me) who can lay on the floorboard and see the back of the speedometer but he had the same problem. Should I continue to be persistent or am I doing something wrong? It seems so simple but it is causing headaches.

You have one of three problems, either the core is too long, the core isn't inserted into the gear at the transmission, or you are not getting the core into the drive on the rear of the speedo. Check the core to see how far it is sticking out of the housing, it should be about 1/2" past the end, if it is farther out, try turning the core and pushing it farther in.
