Mine runs quite well, 11 mpg.
dump the what sounds like single exhaust, get some headers man. The engine needs to breathe. Glass packs don't flow very well, the 70's are over, get some turbo's. I was a die hard glass pack guy until I tried the turbos last year. Big difference in sound, and the low end torque woke up after the headers. Give it a try, you've nothing to lose.

I had a 78 F150, with 31's, 3.50's in axles. I rebuilt the enigne from a 351 to a 400, bored it .030 over, a normal 3 angle valve job. Shaved the heads about .025". Stock compression pistons, which is where i think i went wrong. I also had a Crane 278H cam, which was probably a bit on the big side. 222 degrees duration at .050", and .549" of lift. (Crane's valve springs to match)I ran fenderwell exit headers, with minimal exuast. I also put a 2400 RPM stall converter in the C6. Well, after all that work, I would have thought I would have been able to take my bud's stock 85 K10 with a stock 350, 3.08 gears an 33's! . Well, I was DEAD wrong. I couldn't even brake torque with the trak-loc rear. Pissed me the hell off before I ever got into the mud, and sold it, for a huge loss. Only got 1400 for it. Spent around $2000 total, the crank ended up being expensive, hard to come by for some reason.

Oh yea, I had an edelbrock performer non-egr intake, and a 1406 carb. Set the timing by ear and was running an MSD-6T. Edelbrok timing chain degreed and put in straight up, so we know it was right on. The only thing good that came out of it was that it held 60psi of oil pressure, up from 0 before the build.

You didn't do something right. I have no problem smoking stock Chevys with 350's (see previous post.) Even the new ones have trouble with me.

I just got (like last week) a 70 F-100 2wd with a 77 400/C6 installed. It has 255/70R15 tires, most likely a 2.75 rear end. All you have to do is put it in drive and punch the pedal and the tires (both of them) start spinning. It is a stock 400 with a 2bbl carb and stock manifolds. Has nonpower drums all the way around and is a bit scary to drive. I plan on a power disc swap in the very near future. All the parts I need are just 1 mile up the road from me.
