I am thinking of switching to synthetic on my wifes F150 (07 2wd 4.2l reg cab stick). Is it really worth the extra expence? How far can you extend the change intervals. The truck doesnt haul anything. Just gets her back and forth to work 170 miles round trip 4 days a week. When she is off she drives her mustang around town which we just retired from that daily commute with 160k. So we change the oil almost once a month. What brand should i try?
I use Royal Purple Synthetic in all of my vehicles. I also use it in my Road Course race car. Mobil One is a bit cheaper and easier to find and a good oil. I change my oil every 5k miles in my street vehicles.
If you change the filter every 5k miles you could probably get away with changing the oil every 10k miles, just top off the fluid after you change the filter.
I think Mobil One makes a 15k change syn.
There have been other threads about premium oils (Royal Purple etc.), but If I were changing oil almost once per month, I would choose the motorcraft synthetic blend (5W-20). It is cheaper, you can buy it at wal-mart in the 5-quart jug for about $10.50, and it is what the owner's manual recommends. I bet the real pain is in the gas prices right now. Good luck with that.
I never found any major benifit with the syn oil in my 05.....fuel mileage stayed about the same, i did extend my change intervals to 10K miles, but then again i was spending 3 times more to get 2 times the interval change. I now use ford syn-blend every 5k miles on my 07 and it seems to be doing just as well.....oils never too bad when i change it and mileage has stayed consistant
Mobil 1, or Pennzoil Platinum, Royal Purple etc. I change it a 5k for warranty purposes just to be on the safe side. I know people that do 10k with an oil filter swap 1/2 way through and also have the oil tested and they have had very good results.
